Gilbert Friedell, First Director of Markey Cancer Center, Passes at Age 91

Dr. Gilbert H. “Gil” Friedell, who served as the first director of the UK Markey Cancer Center, passed away on September 23 at the age of 91.

Under Friedell’s leadership, the Markey Cancer Center quickly became one of the foremost authorities on the treatment and research of cancer in the state. Included in his accomplishments was co-founding the Kentucky Cancer Registry and was the lead investigator of the National Cancer Institute’s Mid-South Cancer Information Service.

Friedell had a passion for finding better ways to support the medically under-served communities throughout the state. Prior to his tenure at Markey, Friedell was the catalyst behind Kentucky Homeplace, which supported low-income families in rural Kentucky in gaining greater access to quality healthcare.
