Markey Women Strong

Kentucky has been hit hard, with our state leading the nation in cancer deaths and 26,000 new cases diagnosed each year.

The UK Markey Cancer Center is working to reverse this trend. Through a full range of behavioral, laboratory and clinical research, our expert medical team is helping Kentuckians fight cancer.

One initiative that plays a critical role in groundbreaking research is Markey Women Strong. Since 2016, the fund has invested annually in women researchers focused on furthering leading-edge cancer prevention and treatments at UK Markey. Past grants have helped fund a variety of research areas, including triple negative breast cancer, computational methods that predict drug interactions and metabolic interactions in obesity-associated colon cancer.

Markey Women Strong grants are uniquely supported by a philanthropic group of donors who each give $1,000 annually. These dedicated friends of UK Markey participate in the yearly review and selection of grant recipients, as well as receive progress reports prepared by the researchers.

Every day, UK Markey moves closer to beating cancer in Kentucky.
