Family and friends of Cathy Wolterman Coop gathered together once again on her birthday to celebrate her life and spirit and to donate to a cause that was close to her heart.
While receiving her cancer treatment at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, Cathy often heard stories from the other patients of the many personal issues they were dealing with, whether it be emotionally, monetarily or professionally. True to form, she was eager to help them so they could focus their energy on getting well.
On her final birthday, her family presented her with the ultimate gift; a fund in her name that would support those patients receiving treatment that she worried about so much. The Cathy Wolterman Coop Patient and Family Support Fund assists those undergoing cancer treatment at the UK Markey Cancer Center who are dealing with unique or extreme challenges.
Funds collected have been used to buy gas cards for patients who travel great distances to receive chemotherapy or radiation, to purchase wigs so that their physical condition doesn’t frighten their young children, and help with groceries so single parents or those who are the primary bread winners for their families can not only provide nutritious food for their kids and spouses, but for themselves.
On November 14th, her friends and family joined together once again in her honor to celebrate her life and give to a cause that was important to her. Through donations, silent and live auction and more, they raised close to $25,000 for the Cathy Coop Fund, which means that countless more patients at the UK Markey Cancer Center will be touched by her compassion and generosity.
“This year’s event was a terrific success,” said Cathy’s husband, Brent Coop. “It has been very gratifying to see not just many friends and family from Kentucky and Ohio support Cathy’s fund, but to meet the new supporters who have joined us because of what the fund stands for and whom it supports. There is a real need for this type of cancer patient family support fund.”
