Daphne LaRae Scruggs Fields was a vibrant young woman, who at 34 years old had her life cut much too short due to Triple Negative Breast Cancer. As a wife, mother of two young sons (George and John Robert, a.k.a. Boo), daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend to countless, Daphne’s diagnosis affected so many people around her.
After her passing, Daphne’s family and friends created the non-profit organization, Daphne’s Legacy, Inc., to ensure her memory lives on in meaningful ways. The organization, which raises money for Triple Negative Breast Cancer research, achieves its mission in a way largely influenced by music, one of Daphne’s many passions.
To date in 2019, Daphne’s Legacy has donated a total of $23,000 to the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Foundation, most recently with a check for $13,000. The occasion was made even more meaningful, as her two sons played music for those present in the Pavilion A atrium.
In October, the Markey Cancer Foundation and Daphne’s Legacy are set to begin a five-year, $20,000 agreement in which a music therapy internship program will be created at UK Healthcare. Named the “Daphne Scruggs Fields Music Therapy Internship Program,” the project will create a paid internship for Music Therapy students and support Integrative Medicine at UK Healthcare.
