Markey Cancer Ceter Affiliate Network Teams Up to Help Kentuckians

Dr. Tim Mullett has a different perspective on cancer patients and treatment than most other physicians. As the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network medical director, he sees all too well the toll cancer takes on the Commonwealth. But, his experience goes deeper than that. As a lung cancer survivor, he’s been in their shoes.

Thanks to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation Markey holds, patients at any one of the 20 affiliate network cancer hospitals have access to Markey’s hundreds of doctors, researchers and staff, as well as cutting-edge treatments and clinical trials being embarked upon by the NCI.

Kentucky leads the nation in cancer incidence and mortality, and lung cancer is at the top of the list for the most common types of cancer in the state. The UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network allows patients the highest quality of care closer to home.

“How the network really started was Markey Cancer establishing clinical relationships with other facilities to deliver care in areas that didn’t have cancer care,” said Mullett to The Lane Report. “We really began to look at how to help these programs increase their overall quality of care and make sure that the cancers that can be, are treated close to home.”
